POT-HOLE PROBLEMS

Transport chiefs in Norfolk and Suffolk have launched an investigation after it emerged that roads that were resurfaced last year are already in need of repair because of the icy winter. In Norfolk, council tax-payers are facing a bill of between £1.5m and £2.25m to mend roads damaged by the big freeze-up, which has led to pot-hole problems across the county and "greater deterioration" in the state of the highways.

East Anglia's slumbering housing market is demonstrating fresh signs of revival after new figures revealed a huge jump in residential property sales. Fresh hopes have been raised that the region's economy is recovering at a faster pace than expected following the worst recession in living memory and house price slump. JOBS BOOST

The future of more than 400 jobs in Lowestoft was secured yesterday with the announcement that government fisheries laboratories will be improved and refurbished. The Centre for Environment, Aquaculture and Fisheries Science (Cefas) has revealed plans to invest in its headquarters building in Pakefield Road so that it can upgrade its laboratories and stay in the town for the foreseeable future.

JOB AXE FEARS AT FACTORY

Workers at a cold storage factory are facing possible redundancy after the closure of Birds Eye's pea growing and processing operation in Norfolk and Suffolk. Employees at the Norbert Dentressangle factory in Oulton Broad, near Lowestoft, have entered a 30-day consultation ahead of possible redundancies in the wake of last month's announcement that Birds Eye will no longer be processing frozen peas at the site.

PEERS SLAM COUNCIL SHAKE-UP DECISION

NEW CHILD PROTECTION SCHEME

Norfolk is one of 18 police forces across the country that has been chosen to take part in a pioneering new shceme that will help provide better protection for children from sex offenders. The Child Sex Offender Disclosure Scheme has already had success as part of a pilot project in Cleveland, Hampshire, Warwickshire and Cambridgeshire. More than 60 children were protected from potential abuse during the 12-month trial.

MORE PARENTS GETTING FIRST CHOICE SCHOOL

The great race for a high school place has ended happily for a higher proportion of Norfolk parents and children this year, the EDP can reveal. Yesterday was the day of destiny for more than 8,000 10 and 11 year-olds in the county, with letters, emails and text messages being sent to break the good or bad news. In percentage terms, those given their first choice of school increased signigicantly in Norfolk.

YOUNG PEOPLE DOING WELL

Norfolk is below the national average for the number of young people not in education, work or training. Bosses at Norfolk County Council said that was testament to the efforts of the authority's Connexions Service, which has targeted the young people most likely to find themselves not in education, employment or training. Shelagh Hutson, Norfolk County Council's cabinet member for children's services said: "Our Connexions Service is working extremely hard to match young people with jobs and training that suits their interests and their skills. Working in partnership with schools, colleges and employers, it is having a positive impact on young people's career and training prospects.

A FINE CITY OF CULTURE

COUNCIL STAFF WORKING TRIAL TO BE EXTENDED

A project trialled in north Norfolk which allowed council staff to work more flexible hours could soon be rolled out across the county. The project involved 28 staff and tested out remote access technology which allowed Norfolk County Council employees to work without having to return to their office. In a large county such as Norfolk, social services staff often have to make long and repeated journeys to visit people in their own homes. Not having to return to a single office after each visit has meant dramatically reduced travelling times and lowered mileage costs.

FARMERS: ADAPT AND THRIVE

East Anglia’s farmers are in a good position to help manage the water supply to feed the nation as climate change brings the threat of shortages. This is the message which the chairman of the Environment Agency, Lord Smith, will deliver to delegates at the National Farmers’ Union’s annual conference today. EXPANSION OF SCIENCE PARK
