TRAFFIC FEARS OVER COLLEGE RELOCATION

DUALLING OF FINAL STRETCH OF A11

There was jubilation across the region last night as it emerged that a fully dualled Norwich/London road is to become a reality and could be open as early as Autumn 2012. Transport secretary Geoff Hoon confirmed plans to dual the last remaining stretch of single carriageway on the A11 were being brough forward, bringing to an end nearly 40 years of campaigning and providing a major boost to East Anglia's economy.

NORFOLK POST OFFICES

HEALTHCARE MOVE BRINGS JOBS JOY TO SOFTWARE FIRM

LOCAL FIGURES

Unemployment is rising in East Anglia, but at a slower rate than some other regions, it emerged yesterday. The latest figures revealed that 140,000 people in the east of England were out of work in the three months to September, an unemployment rate of 4.8pc. Megan Dobney, regional secretary for the TUC in the east of England said: "Sadly, the figures are already months out of date and so they do not reflect the grim reality of the consequences of the economic downturn. There is invevitably much worse news for the retion to come."

SUPERMARKET PLANS WILL CREATE JOBS

A supermarket has unveiled plans for a major new store in King's Lynn which could create up to 400 jobs in an expanding industrial estate. Sainbury's has reached an agreement to buy part of the Pinguin Foods site, north of the Hardwick Junction, in order to build its second branch in the town.

SUNQUEST TIE-UP COULD CREATE JOBS

The new owner of a Norfolk healthcare systems company has raised hopes of new jobs after its acquisition. Anglia Healthcare Systems has been taken over by a Sunquest Information Systems, a US-based market leader. Anglia which employs about 50 staff, is based in Little Melton, near Norwich. "If anything, the takeover will mean more jobs," said Sunquest vice-president for international sales and operations David Allcock.

FIRM WARNS IT WILL MOVE AWAY

Halesworth plastics firm Spectra has warned that if they do not get planning permission for their proposed new factory on the outskirts of Halesworth, they will have to leave the town. Staff numbers will rise from 35 to 60 within a year whether or not their application is approved due to “considerable” demand for their products. The two existing sites on Broadway Drive and Blyth Road Industrial Estate would close.

RAF SITE PRISON

Plans to build a 500 strong Category C prison on part of the the former airbase at RAF Coltishall have been put back on track by government officials. Council officers in north Norfolk have received a second planning applicationfor the Scottow prison in the last few days. TOWN ON SHORTLIST TO ATTRACT NEW JOBS

A bid to spark a jobs and investment bonanza in Lowestoft has taken a major step forward after the town was shortlisted to host a new government department. The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) will take up to 400 jobs to its chosen location, providing a shot in the arm to the local economy. If successful it is proposed to base the MMO at the Waveney Campus development by the banks of Lake Lothing.

DIY PLANS

A national DIY retailer is planning a £7m redevelopment of a former Turkish Delight factory sitein Norfolk. The redundant sultans land at Thetford has been vacant for the last four years after a devastating blaze led to more than 85 job losses. But the brownfield site, off London road, could be turned into a wickes DIY store and garden centre under proposals submitted to Breckland Council. If given the go-ahead the store would employ between 35 - 40 people in Thetford.

SCHOOL ON COURSE TO BE ACADEMY
